Weight and See: Putting our Makers Bunks to the test

21 April 2023

Given the current economic and environmental climate, buying once and buying right is certainly the best way forward for the sensible furniture purchase. That’s why we put our bunks through rigorous testing – to ensure they can stand up to high use in various different accommodation while providing a healthy and comfortable place to sleep.

Sustainable purchasing decisions for worker accommodation requires assessing the entire life cycle of the product. While cheaper beds and bunks may be available, will these last the distance across many seasons and many people? It’s known that cheap furniture fills landfill and drains bank accounts, making this both an environmental issue and an economic one. Our bunk beds are made to last across worker accommodation, backpackers, student accommodation, holiday parks and more.

Choosing the right bunk is also about safety. To prevent injury, good quality bunk beds will meet safety requirements. These are things like height from ground level, guard rail use and spacing, and the strength of ladders and structural uprights. Stability tests must be passed to show the robustness of bunk beds for a range of weights, and all fastenings must be flush and secure.

Humans come in many shapes and sizes too. This means high-quality furniture needs to allow for this variety.

How does our bunk weigh up?

In our comprehensive research and development processes we ensure all of our products are fit for purpose – and then some. That’s why we are so proud of the Stacka Bunk and why we recommend it across all industries that require bunk beds for accommodation and guest stay.

These well designed and constructed bunk beds exceed NZ/AUS safety requirements. Weight rated at 300kg per tier, the Stacka Bunk is made from 1.2mm heavy gauge steel, with side rail spacers welded and bolted securely for ultimate robustness.

Don’t just take our word for it – have a look at the video here to see up close the serious weight these bunks can handle.

To avoid the bunk bed sag, these platforms are bolted and bracketed to the posts. They also have welded support rails through the centre with a steel mesh overlay. This creates a stable, comfortable, even tier that accommodates a variety of mattress thicknesses while still allowing for airflow.

The Stacka comes in a single or king single size. There is also the option of adding on a privacy curtain kit and steel underbed storage and cubby lockers.
