How to Treat Common Stains on White Brushed Microfiber
Jim BoakesFor white 100% brushed microfiber fabric (typically polyester microfiber with a brushed finish), the goal is not just stain removal but also preserving whiteness, softness, and fiber integrity.
Microfiber behaves differently from cotton—it is hydrophobic, attracts oils, and can be damaged by excessive heat and certain chemicals.
General Principles
Do:
- Treat stains as soon as possible
- Use warm water (30-40°C) rather than hot water
- Separate whites from colours
- Use a quality liquid detergent
- Use oxygen bleach regularly to maintain whiteness
Don’t:
- Chlorine bleach as a routine treatment (can yellow polyester over time and weaken fibers)
- Fabric softeners (they coat microfiber and reduce performance)
- High heat drying
- Excessive alkalis or harsh solvents
Best Chemical Arsenal
Daily Wash:
Heavy-duty liquid detergent
- Persil Ultimate
- Tide Hygienic Clean
- OMO Ultimate
Liquid detergents generally perform better on greasy stains than powders.
Whitening Agent
Oxygen bleach (sodium percarbonate)
- Napisan Oxi Action
- Vanish Oxi Action White
Excellent for:
- Food stains
- Wine
- Blood remnants
- General dinginess
Protein Stains
Enzyme based stain remover

- Vanish Preen Gold
Excellent for:
- Blood
- Sweat
- Food Proteins
- Dairy
Hydrogen Peroxide (3%)
Excellent for:
- Red wine
- Coffee
- Tea
- Fruit Juice
Oil & Grease
Dishwashing Liquid
Excellent first treatment for:
- Body Oils
- Food Grease
- Make-up
Stain-Specific Procedures
Blood
Fresh Blood
- Flush with cold water immediately
- Apply enzyme stain remover
- Let sit 15-30 minutes
- Wash at 40°C
Dried Blood
- Soak overnight in cool water + oxygen bleach
- Apply enzyme remover
- Wash normally
Never use hot water first – it sets proteins permanently.
Food Stains
General Food
- Remove solids
- Apply enzyme stain remover
- Wait 15 minutes
- Wash warm (40°C)
Tomato-Based Sauces
- Flush from back of fabric
- Treat with detergent
- Follow with oxygen bleach soak
- Wash
Sun-drying after treatment can naturally bleach residual tomato pigments.
Red Wine
Immediate Action
- Blot – don’t rub
- Flood with cold water
- Apply oxygen bleach solution
For Set Stains
- Treat with hydrogen peroxide 3%
- Let sit 10-15 minutes
- Wash with oxygen bleach
Avoid salt; largely a myth and often ineffective.
Ink
Ballpoint Ink
- Place absorbent towel underneath
- Dab with isopropyl alcohol (70%-90%)
- Blot repeatedly
- Wash normally
Permanent Marker
- Use isopropyl alcohol
- Repeat several times
- Wash immediately
Always test alcohol on an inconspicuous area first.
Soil & Mud
- Allow mud to dry completely
- Brush off loose dirt
- Pre-treat with detergent
- Wash warm with oxygen bleach
Wet scrubbing often drives soil deeper into fibers.
Body Oils & Yellowing
This is often the biggest issue with white microfiber.
Monthly Restoration Wash
Per 10kg load:
- Quality detergent
- 1 scoop oxygen bleach
- Warm wash (40°C)
For severe yellowing:
- Soak 4-6 hours in warm water + oxygen bleach
- Wash immediately afterwards
Commercial Hospitality / Accomodation Standard
If these items are used in:
- Airbnb
- Hotels
- Accomodation
- Healthcare
- Shared Workspaces
A highly effective protocol is:
Step 1 – Pre soak:
- Warm water
- Oxygen bleach (sodium percarbonate)
Step 2 – Main wash:
- Heavy-duty detergent
- 40°C wash
Step 3 – Extra rinse:
Step 4 – Tumble Dry:
Low-temperature tumble dry or line dry.
this process removes more blood, wine, food and body-oil staining while keeping microfiber bright white.
Best Overall Formula
If you were maintaining a fleet of white microfiber bedding or upholstery and wanter the simplest, most effective system:
- Pre-treat stains with Sard Wonder Spray (enzyme)
- Wash with Persil Ultimate or Tide Hygienic Clean
- Add oxygen bleach (Napisan/Vanish White) to every white load
- Avoid chlorine bleach and fabric softener
- Dry on low heat
That combination will keep white brushed microfiber looking new longer than almost any other routine.
