It’s time to come clean – How to wash waterproof bedding items

5 December 2022

How do you wash something that’s designed to stay dry? It may seem like an odd question at first glance. But, as with the maintenance and upkeep of other bedding, sometimes a little insider knowledge can make a big difference for overall longevity and usability of waterproof products.

Good waterproofing care can save a lot of time and money. With a few clever tips and some everyday common sense, waterproof pillows, clothing liners, and mattress protectors should last for many years, no matter how hard they’re working.

How waterproof items can help

Waterproof products are generally important when it comes to keeping everyone happy, healthy, and comfortable. Spills and splashes won’t be absorbed into furnishings and mattresses, causing the need for lengthy cleaning sessions. Laundering a small absorbent pad is less work than putting through an entire sheet set too – which saves time for staff and, ultimately, keeps the bookkeeper happy too.

These products have a wide range of applications too. Our Guest customers find quilted products like the DuoPlus range essential – the added soft layer of quilting over the silent rustle-free, waterproof backing increases the comfort and hygiene level of mattresses and pillows keeping them dry  from moisture and stains. Our Care customers understand how  clothing protectors help protect at mealtimes, while our tidy absorbent chair pads will save the chair upholstery from accidents and spills!

Washing mattress protectors

Before use, mattress protectors should be pre-washed with a gentle, eco-friendly detergent to remove any manufacturing odours and to soften the fabric. The product can be machine dried on a low heat or hung out to dry naturally. Ensure it is completely dry before use, as trapped moisture can cause mildew and bacteria to grow.

Cold water is best for maintenance washing unless you are trying to remove stains. These should be attended to with minimal rubbing to avoid breaking up the waterproofing layer. Pre-treat stains with your usual detergent products or try a combination of baking soda and water or, for more difficult stains, hydrogen peroxide.
